Ministry Licensing

The reasons for making distinctions between ordained and licensed ministers vary by denomination. Ordination often permits ministers to perform church rites and sacraments, such as legal marriages, baptisms, and funerals. While many religious organizations give licensed ministers the authority to officiate weddings, state laws may restrict the officiant's role to ordained clergy.

Ministry Ordination

Many religious organizations consider ordained ministers to be permanent clergy. In contrast, licensed ministers may have more limited roles. The authority granted by ordination includes the ability to perform a range of religious ceremonies, though the exact duties may differ depending on the denomination and local laws.
